About Turnitin
Originality checking used by many schools and universities, with similarity reports and an AI writing indicator for submitted work.
Turnitin compares submitted work against web pages, published sources and a large database of earlier student papers, then produces a similarity report that highlights matching passages. Schools usually connect it to their learning management system, so checks run when students hand in work.
It also offers an AI writing indicator that estimates how much of a submission may have been written by AI. Turnitin says the indicator is not proof on its own, and it can be wrong, including on writing by multilingual students and on short texts.
A similarity score is a prompt to look closer, not a verdict. Matches can be properly quoted sources or common phrases. Before acting on any report, read the matched passages, talk with the student, and follow your school's academic integrity policy.
